Project Registration
Registering a project early on in the process is extremely important; it solidifies the commitment for the designers to follow suit. This is a common thread throughout the LEED AP Exam?: earlier is optimal. The exam covers all aspects of project administration; some important things to remember are: register early, register online (save the trees, remember?), fees are member-based.
Who Can Register? Anyone can register a LEED project; however if a USGBC member signs up the project, they are offered reduced members’ fees rather than the non-member price. Registration is a flat rate $450 for members and $600 for non-members. Don’t be fooled; there are additional costs to certify the project. Certification costs are based on square footage of the project.
Update: Beginning 2010, there will be fees for expediting a project, as well as increases to all fees. There are design review fees, construction fees, or the two can be combined for a better rate. These fees should be presented to the owner, and the owner of the new construction project (or interior, or existing building) should be prepared to pay these fees and more in order to certify a building. Again, if a member is signed in, reduced fees will apply. Click here to see the full table of fees for the remainder of 2009 and the new fees starting 2010.
On the LEED AP Exam, it’s important to know what the USGBC will ask for upon registering a project for LEED Certification. I’ve mentioned this a few times already, but I’ll say it again: anything on the USGBC’s website is fair game for the exam. The USGBC’s website is an excellent place to check for registration information.
